Tshepiso Machaba the bricklayer
The journey to a construction site in Mamelodi introduced us to the warm welcoming jubilant smile of a young and self-motivated man , a bricklayer by the name of Tshepiso Machaba. This brave young man has opened up his heart to tell the world about the giant steps he took in order to be where he is and the baby steps he will take to be where he wants to be.He has also shared his future aspirations. This essay serves to unwrap his journey and his dreams as a bricklayer.
Tshepiso felt comfortable communicating with us in several languages (Tswana, IsiZulu) including English
Tshepiso grew up in the small country of Lesotho . As a young boy he embarked his schooling career at Ngkwene Primary School. He furthered his studies at Ntshabane High School. In 2008 he moved from Lesotho to Pretoria to look for work and a better future. This is where he started his training at Ntokoshi Construction Enterprise where he was trained by Isaac Mazibuko and Jabu.
''Bricklaying requires a lot of precision and accuracy, this is executed using different equipment." he said. the everyday equipment he uses, among others, are water-pas, profiles, skippers, pencils, spade, fish-lane, hammer and hiking stick.
Tshepiso expressed his feelings for his job very openly by explaining why he loves his job. '' I love the fact that i can be involved in a project such as this one from start to finish'' he said. He went on to say that he would still want to know more about bricklaying and to increase his knowledge about it.
He is truly grateful for Mr Mazibuko and Jabu 's help and looks up to them.
During the long hours at work this endurer passed his time by humming a melody or a tune of a song he likes.
We asked him if he had any advises to give to people out there who would love to be involve in bricklaying and this is what he had to say.

Bricklaying underway |
- If you want to become a bricklayer you must have the passion and get the right training
- You must ask around your communities if there are construction projects and volunteer in order to obtain more experience and knowledge.
The video below shows the actual interview.
We as a group would love to give thanks to Mr T Machaba for making time to talk to us concerning bricklaying. This interview with him really opened our eyes on how important a bricklayer is on a construction site and that nothing can be build without his presence on the construction site. This interview also helped us improve on our communication skills and also taught us how to approach people and make them feel free to express themselves. We give thanks to our sponsors.
