Your project: Builders of our city

Dear students

This blog site is a collaborative project. It provides a platform whereby the different groups in your class have the opportunity to showcase the stories of some of the people responsible for building our city. The aim here is to provide digital documentation, by way of text, voice recording and photographs, of the process whereby the professional literacies of at least two workers on your chosen building site were acquired.

Design a page entitled ‘The story of how (name/s) became a ______________).

Guidelines and requirements
·    Title: ‘The story of ____________ (please use a pseudonym to protect the privacy of the individual’s story).’
·      Presentation: The blog should contain at least photographs and text, but you are encouraged to also include any other modes of presentation, such as music, narration and video, that the blogging software may allow. Photographs should be labelled according to the guidelines provided in your study guide. There are other formatting principles discussed there which you could pay attention to.
·   Planning: Please obtain informed consent from the person/s whose literacy history you choose to document.
o   The assignment will require some research, which may include interviews, collecting and taking photographs, collecting and getting information from documents (such as certificates, etc.), downloading and inserting audio clips, etc.
o   You could gather information such as:
§  What languages does the individual communicate in fluently?
§  Where and when the interviewee commenced their training?
§  Who played an important role in their training? Did this imply a period of apprenticeship?
§  What different projects has he/she worked on in the area?
§  Which construction–related skills can he/she apply effectively? What role can he/she play in transferring this knowledge?
·         Content
o   The narrative (or story) you tell should be a chronological series of events told in a narrative style.
o   Pay particular attention to the people and circumstances that have played important roles in assisting __________to develop__________, the domains in which the events took place (e.g. home, school, community, etc.), as well as the challenges they faced in acquiring this literacy, and possible turning points.
o   Your assignment should reflect the insight you have gained into the professional literacy history of ______________________, particularly in the conclusion.

·         Structure
Carefully design the overall structure and layout. Your narrative should at least have an introduction, body and conclusion. The body may be further subdivided into different phases or you may single out significant events, which you narrate in a chronological order. Your written work should not exceed 750 words.

·       Creativity
Be inventive, creative and insightful. You should include more than one medium in your assignment.

You may be asked in class to respond to the stories presented by each group.
